The problem in three sentences
Every construction site has two layers. The permanent layer is what we are building — it is modelled, checked and managed by a whole industry called BIM. The temporary layer is everything people do to build it — scaffolds, cranes, laydown areas, excavations, hazard zones — and it is managed by memory, radio, and Excel.
We digitalised the goal. We barely digitalised the work.
The idea
Every temporary thing on a site can be described the same simple way:
a place + a date range + an owner.
A scaffold, a crane radius, a laydown, a permit area, a test zone — all the same simple shapes. Where, when, who.
Here we call this object a plot: a Planned Location Over Time.
The word is chosen with care. A plot is a piece of land. To plot is to plan ahead. You plot work on a chart. And a story has a plot — the site’s own history, recorded as it happens. All four meanings are the job.
The method — five rules
1. One shape for everything. Every temporary work or zone is registered as a plot: place, dates, owner. Nothing more complex is needed.
2. Before, not after. A plot is registered before the work starts. A record of the past is a report. A record of the near future prevents problems.
3. By the crews themselves. The foreman plots his own work — because it is how he claims his area, gets his space, and sees his neighbours. Plotting must be useful to the person doing it, or the data dies.
4. Over the engineering model. The permanent layer is already there, in 3D, with correct coordinates. Plots live on the same picture, exactly where they will physically be.
5. As open data. A plot is a row in a simple table. The register exports freely, the schema is public, and the data belongs to the project — not to any software vendor. The temporary layer is the one part of construction data that can be born open.
Plot the temporary layer onto the permanent model and you have what the industry calls a construction site digital twin — with the half that was always missing.
What you get
- Conflicts dissolve early. The foreman plotting Tuesday sees the crew that plotted Monday — and the collision is solved by one phone call, days before it becomes physical.
- The model shows the future. Pick a date, see the site as it will be that day — including things no drone can photograph, because they are not built yet.
- Hazard zones become visible on the picture everyone shares.
- The morning meeting runs on a picture, not on memory.
- The site produces history. How long works really take, what really blocks whom — data this industry has never had.
What PLOT is not
- Not a 4D simulation. 4D is planner-authored, built in an office, out of date the same day. PLOT is crew-authored — a live register of the near future.
- Not reality capture. Drones and cameras show the past, and cannot see indoors. PLOT registers what has not happened yet.
- Not a reporting system. Nobody fills in data for management. People plot because it works for them — or they do not plot at all.
- Not a savings percentage. Nobody has measured this field yet, so I will not invent a number. I will measure it openly instead, and publish the results — whatever they say.
The people
The method has a subject and a guardian, and they are not the same person.
The plotter is the subject: the foreman, engineer, supervisor or inspector whose work takes ground and can block somebody. The method is what they do — claim, look, agree, work, close out. Everything PLOT promises depends on that person finding it worth two minutes, which is why the site owes them a trustworthy model, an instant answer to “who else is here?”, and the certainty that their history will never be used against them.
The guardian is the PLOT master. The PLOT master owns the process, never the space: crews decide their own claims, and the PLOT master keeps the register honest, the meetings short, and the method serving the foremen. It is a natural next step for BIM managers and coordinators — the first real answer to “what is the career path after BIM?”
Where the idea comes from
PLOT came out of practical work with 3D models on site — at the point where the engineering model stopped being something to review in an office and became a working tool for the people doing the work.
The rest came from watching how sites already handle the temporary layer. They do handle it: a permit to work, a lifting plan, a scaffold tag, a marked-up site plan, a foreman who remembers the scaffolders are due on the same wall. Much of the time it works. It rests on discipline, memory and luck — two crews find their conflict only if one person holds both claims at the same moment and calls both parties. Scale that to forty crews and it is the matching that breaks, not the recording.
So PLOT does not ask a site to record something new. It asks the records to sit on one picture, so the match is made by the register rather than by whoever happened to remember both. Railways book possessions, utilities register street works, aviation publishes notices to everyone a hazard may affect. Onshore construction is the outlier.
